Professor Carlo Scolastico
Major Appointments:
1980 – present Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Milano
1962 – 1980 Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry – University of Milano
He is presently serving as Director for the Centro di Eccellenza CISI ( Center of biomolecular Interdisciplinary Studies and Industrial applications) at the University of Milano. He served as Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry (1983-84), Director of the Post-graduate School in Chemical Synthesis (1991-92), and Coordinator of the Ph. D. Programme in Chemical Sciences (1994-98) at the same University.
Since 2001 he is the coordinator of the European Marie Curie Training Site “Design, discovery and synthesis of functional molecules” at the University of Milano, and coordinated one European Training Network within the HCM Programme (1997-98).
He has been Scientific Coordinator of various National Research Programmes and of many Projects of National Research Council.
He serves as member of the editorial board of ChemTracts – Organic Chemistry and of International Advisory Board of Ischia Advanced School of Organic Chemistry.
He is the author of over 300 publications in international journals.
Research Area:
Prof. Scolastico began his career working on the isolation and structural determination of natural compounds. In particular, he got involved with the study of the biosynthesis of fungal metabolites with antibiotical and cytostatic activity and developed the total synthesis of various bioactive molecules of industrial interest. He then moved to the field of stereoselective synthesis with chiral reagents and of stereoselective catalysis. More recently his research activity has been focused on the rational, computer-based design of bioactive compounds, on the study of structure-activity relationships, and on the use of combinatorial chemistry for the discovery of bioactive molecules.
Awards and Honours
In 2001 he received the Adolfo Quilico Medal of the Italian Chemical Society.

Prof. Carlo Scolastico
Holds a degree in Industrial Chemistry from University of Milano and the “Libera Docenza” in Organic Chemistry
