We Are a Centre of Excellence

The CISI was born to bridge the excellent public and academic resources of the group with industry research. CISI is headed by Professor Carlo Scolastico »

Our Principle Areas of Activity
The main biotechnology concerns in Italy regard the sectors of healthcare, agriculture and environmental sciences and the CISI undertakes research primarily in these areas. Some of the actual uses of the technological platforms include for example:

  • Agriculture: discovery and selection of new plant species and the genetic improvement of foodstocks, safety testing of genetically engineered products
  • Healthcare: rapid diagnosis of important pathological conditions caused by viruses and other pathogens, cancer diagnostics, Drug and Biotherapeutic discovery
  • Environment: discovery of new assays for evaluating environmental samples, including the presence of OGM.

A Strategic Position
Being situated inside a research consortium permits the CISI to have access to many valuable resources, including access to many biological samples that are needed to validate research. Inside the science park the CISI represents a research facility that delivers innovation to Multimedica for their diagnostics activities and to BioRep for their activities in the preservation and assessment of biological materials. The CISI also offers multidisciplinary support to all the companies within the science park (KtedoGen, NeED, Naicons) and to many other companies who have chosen CISI as a research partner.

Location and Structure
The CISI is geographically situated in the heart of the province of Lombardy within the city of Milan. This strategic location contains much of Italy’s Academic, Government and Private Sector biotechnological resources This strategic location offers favourable opportunities for collaboration between academia, national research councils and companies in the fields of biotechnology and advanced biomedical research; in fact this region contains:

  • almost 100% of the companies producing scientific instruments

  • 75% of Italy’s biotech companies: more than 5000 companies specialized in areas from agrofood to environmental sciences to pharmaceuticals
  • many large research centers, including the University of Milan, University of Milan-Bicocca, University Vita e Salute, 7 scientifically important large hospitals and various institutes of the National Research Council.
